<p>A new <a class="zem_slink" title="LED lamp" rel="wikipedia" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LED_lamp">LED lighting</a> package which has now been released by The LED Shop <a class="zem_slink" title="United Kingdom" rel="geolocation" href="http://maps.google.com/maps?ll=51.5,-0.116666666667&amp;spn=10.0,10.0&amp;q=51.5,-0.116666666667 (United%20Kingdom)&amp;t=h">UK</a> will be of interest to those <a class="zem_slink" title="Fishkeeping" rel="wikipedia" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fishkeeping">Aquarists</a> who have the Fluval Edge 23 litre Orange/Black/Pewter aquarium and who wish to improve on the current lighting set up which consists of two 10 Watt halogen MR11 bulbs.</p>
<p>This arrangement, for illumination purposes relies solely on the narrow beam angle of the halogen spotlights and as a result, the light is concentrated on two very specific areas within the centre of the tank.</p>
<p>The upgrade kit – available from The LED Shop UK – consists of two 1 Watt high power Cree LED bulbs (available in Cool White or Warm White).</p>

<p>Supplementing these retro-fit bulbs are two quality 1.65 Watt 15 cm Light Bars. Fabricated in Aluminium and each containing six <a class="zem_slink" title="Plastic leaded chip carrier" rel="wikipedia" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Plastic_leaded_chip_carrier">PLCC</a> 50-50 high quality <a class="zem_slink" title="Light-emitting diode" rel="wikipedia" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Light-emitting_diode">LEDs</a>, each Bar giving out a luminous flux of 110 lumen.</p>
<p>The Light Bars are fed by a 240VAC in / 24VDC out plug in Driver which is included in the kit along with all the necessary leads, connectors and in-line switch. <a href="http://easilyled.files.wordpress.com/2010/09/img_0021.jpg"><img class="alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-65" title="The LED Lighting Kit" src="http://easilyled.files.wordpress.com/2010/09/img_0021.jpg?w=150&#038;h=112" alt="" width="150" height="112" /></a></p>
<p>The upgrade kit is very simple to install with error free connections and comes with a full set of instructions.</p>
<p>The beam angle of the Light Bars at 110° affords a more even spread of light throughout the tank whilst the 1 Watt LEDs highlight the central area.</p>
<p>Another major advantage of this upgrade to LED lighting is the superior <a class="zem_slink" title="Color rendering index" rel="wikipedia" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Color_rendering_index">Colour Rendering Index</a> (C.R.I.). <p>There is very little heat generated by the LED set-up, the <a class="zem_slink" title="Halogen" rel="wikipedia" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Halogen">halogens</a> by comparison run extremely hot.</p>
<p><span style="text-decoration:underline;">The total luminous flux from Cree (cool white) LED Bulbs and Light Bars is 460 lumen.</span></p>
<p><span style="text-decoration:underline;">This equates to having 40 &#8211; 50 Watts of halogen light in the tank. </span></p>
<p><span style="text-decoration:underline;">Two and a half  times that which is put out by the <a class="zem_slink" title="Halogen lamp" rel="wikipedia" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Halogen_lamp">halogen bulbs</a>! </span></p>
<p><span style="text-decoration:underline;"> </span>The running costs of the Upgrade Kit are minuscule, costing an incredibly low 3.7p per day when run for 8 hours! That works out at only £1.34 per year!</p>
<p>The lifespan of the LEDs is 35,000+ hours. <p>The amount of electricity that has to be generated to power a LED bulb compared to that of an ordinary light bulb or a halogen downlight is very small.</p>
<p>This is obviously of benefit to you financially because of the energy savings, however it is great for the environment as your carbon footprint is reduced accordingly.</p>
<p>Interestingly, when we consider the two most popular and successful electrical energy micro-generation methods, solar and wind, they can be combined extremely efficiently with LED lighting and can provide free light from 100% sustainable and natural resources.</p>
<p>Whilst it is appreciated that it is not practical for everyone to generate their own electricity at the present time, it is obvious that LEDs are the way forward for us all given the cost, the amazing longevity and the fact that they do not produce environmental contamination unlike C.F.L.s, Tungsten/Halogen and Phosphorous based lamps.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><span style="text-decoration:underline;">Fluorescent Lighting and UV Radiation.</span></p>
<p>The standard office lighting generally in use in the UK today is of the fluorescent tube variety. Technically these tubes and associated luminaries are termed Category 1, 2 or 3 and are designed to direct light downwards away from VDU screens.</p>
<p>Unshielded as these luminaries are, they concentrate the light pattern and the Ultra Violet (U.V.) spectrum that is emitted by the tubes in this downward direction and on to the skin of people who happen to be in that vicinity.</p>
<p>The main components of Ultra Violet radiation are UV-A and UV-B.</p>
<p>The generally held opinion amongst the specialists is that UV-B is responsible for the majority of skin cancers such as melanomas.</p>
<p>U.V. radiation is a major contributor towards skin ageing by chronic cell damage. Also wrinkling of the skin along with collagen damage and ‘sagging’ can all be attributed in some degree to U.V. radiation.</p>
<p>It is fair to say that exposure to the sun is generally accepted as the main cause of premature ageing, however it is being suggested that constant exposure to fluorescent tubes is also a contributory factor.</p>
<p>In a report by the International Commission on Illumination it was suggested that the human mortality risk in the UK from the use of fluorescent tubes is 30 deaths per year. Although this risk is small, it is avoidable.</p>
<p>The main concern is that anyone who has to work or study for lengthy periods of time under unshielded fluorescent lighting, has no control over their environment. This is likely to become a major health issue in the very near future which needs a solution.</p>
<p>The solution is of course LED Lighting. This is the future of lighting throughout the world. By 2020 it is forecast that 90% of all lighting will be LED.</p>
<p>There is a comprehensive range of LED tubes on the market right now. Most are retrofit and need little or no modification to the fluorescent fitting. There are many benefits with LED tubes :-</p>
<p>1/ They do not emit UV radiation</p>
<p>2/ They do not contain harmful substances that need careful disposal.</p>
<p>3/ They run cool.</p>
<p>4/ They are economical to run and reduce the carbon footprint and your bill!</p>
<p>5/ They do not ‘flicker’ and therefore do not cause the associated problems.</p>
<p>6/ They have a great longevity – up to 50,000 hours (15 years at 10 hours per day.) Will not need replacing every few months like fluorescents!</p>

<p>I am constantly asked this question where LED’s are concerned. How many downlights and at what Wattage or more accurately Lumen do I need in a given room.</p>
<p>There are scientific methods for accurately calculating the amount of light required in a specific location, however these are long winded and complicated and take into account many variable factors such as wall colour etc.</p>
<p>The best ‘rule of thumb’ method I’ve come across is what I call the</p>
<p>‘Total Lumen’ method.</p>
<p>This takes the area of the room in square feet and multiplies by a factor known as ‘footcandles’ this has a fixed value for this purpose of 30.</p>
<p>Therefore in a typical modern kitchen of say 12 feet x 10 feet we get :-</p>
<p>120 x 30 =3600 Lumen</p>
<p>Using our 6 Watt MR16 Bulb in cool white @ 400 Lumen  </p>
<p>3600 divided by 400 = 9 Downlights</p>

<p>Concerned about global warming and climate change?</p>
<p>Serious about reducing your carbon footprint?</p>
<p>Many solutions, whilst being commendable are just not practical.</p>
<p>However there is a solution that is not only good for the environment but good for your pocket and your health! – ‘Switch’ to LED Lighting.</p>
<p>Please allow me to explain:-</p>
<p>LED’s are the way forward for our future lighting needs. However the average person seems to be ‘in the dark’ when it comes to LED technology. (Please excuse the pun).</p>
<p>I would like to attempt to put the facts before you in layman’s terms and hopefully persuade you to consider switching to this wonderful green technology.</p>
<p>What is a LED?</p>
<p>A LED is a light emitting diode. In essence they are used to produce light in a very efficient and cost effective way, saving energy and at the same time protecting the environment! There are many advantages to LED lighting which I will now try to explain.</p>
<p>Energy Saving.</p>
<p>LED’s can save an enormous 85% of the electricity used by traditional incandescent bulbs. They can also save up to 50% of electricity used by CFL’s and fluorescents.</p>
<p>LED’s run cool.</p>
<p>An incandescent bulb converts most of the energy it uses into heat which is usually wasted. In fact in certain circumstances this can cause an even greater use of electricity where in certain locations air conditioners are employed to control the ambient temperature.</p>
<p>Cost Saving.</p>
<p>As an example, the typical 35 Watt halogen downlight bulb that many of us have in our homes, running for 5 hours per day and 365 days per year, would cost £6.37 in running costs in one year. Now a suitable LED replacement of 5 Watts would cost a staggeringly low 91p per year to run requiring only 1/7<sup>th</sup> of the electricity.</p>
<p>Light Quality</p>
<p>This can be defined by two main parameters – Colour Temperature and Colour Rendering. These can be quite complex however I will try to simplify the definitions of each parameter.</p>
<p>Colour Temperature.</p>
<p>This has nothing to do with heat from the lamp but the shade of white that is required i.e. Warmer or Cooler. Warmer shade is towards the ‘redder’ end of the spectrum whist Cooler is towards the ‘Bluer’ end.</p>
<p>Colour Rendering.</p>
<p>This measured on an index scale – CRI (colour rendering index) which is an indication of the bulbs ability to produce ‘natural light’ and make the colours look true.</p>
<p>The scale is graded 0-100 and the closer to 100 the more natural the light. A typical fluorescent tube has a CRI of 72 whereas a typical quality LED has a CRI of 92.</p>
<p>Still on the subject of light quality it has to be said that from a health perspective the use of LED’s heralds a new greener age for human friendly illumination. Recent medical research has revealed the dramatic effect of light quality on the general health and longevity of humans and also, animals. LED’s have a very clear and beneficial advantage over conventional lamps.</p>
<p>Longevity.</p>
<p>LED’s have a very long lifespan compared to conventional bulbs. Up to 50,000 hours of useable life. Used 5 hours per day for 365 days per year would amount to a lifespan of 27+ years!</p>
<p>LED’s tend not to just ‘fail’. They grow dimmer towards the end of their useable life. A good quality LED from Cree – a top manufacturer will still produce 70% of its maximum output even after 50,000 hours of use!</p>
<p>Environmentally Friendly</p>
<p>Now here is a great reason to switch to LED’s.</p>
<p>We are all very much aware that we need to protect our planet and our environment sooner rather than later. By switching to LED technology we can significantly reduce our carbon footprint.</p>
<p>A recent report from the U.S. Dept. of Energy estimates that, by 2025 LED lighting alone will have eliminated a massive 258 million tonnes of carbon emissions!</p>
<p>Affordability.</p>
<p>This is one of the main concerns when considering LED bulbs. It is correct to say quality LED bulbs are not cheap. Quality LED package production is not a cheap process however the ongoing cost savings are enormous.</p>
<p>An average quality LED downlight will set you back around £20 whereas a decent 35 Watt halogen will cost only £2. Now over a period of say 15 years the halogen would cost £30 in replacement costs plus £81.90 in running costs giving a combined total of £110.90 – not including any labour charges where applicable and not allowing for inflation.</p>
<p>The LED by comparison would cost only £33.65.</p>
<p>This surely has to be a great investment for health, wealth and the environment.</p>
